I spent 5 months in Costa Rica with Jamso Trainee – of which I spent almost 2 months volunteering at a public elementary school and had the best time there! Both the way of life in Costa Rica and my work in the project captivated me so much that I would have preferred not to leave.
During my stay in Costa Rica, I lived together with many other volunteers in an accommodation on the Pacific coast. Although we all had different schedules, we always had dinner together and enjoyed spending our free time together. Because my working day didn’t start until early midday, I had time to myself in the morning and was able to start the day in a relaxed way. Around 12 noon, I went to school, where I supported the teacher of a pre-school class. She and the children were very welcoming and I felt very comfortable there. My tasks coincided with those of the teacher: together with the children, we did a lot of handicrafts, painted, sang and started to get them used to school life in a playful way. Volunteering was definitely an enriching experience for me – I gained an interesting insight into Costa Rican culture, was able to improve my Spanish and had a lot of fun with the children.
I always had the weekends off and enjoyed spending time on the beach with the other volunteers. I also discovered surfing as a new hobby for me, which has become one of my favorite activities in Costa Rica! We also enjoyed going out on our days off to discover new places and get to know the country better, which gave me lots of unforgettable impressions.
In conclusion, I can say that I enjoyed my time in Costa Rica to the full! The sense of community among the volunteers, the encounter with a completely different culture and the feeling of “pura vida” that prevails in the country made the experience something very special for me. I can highly recommend a trip to Costa Rica to anyone who is up for an adventure and wants to be infected by the relaxed way of life!
