Volunteering in Costa Rica

Living abroad offers great opportunities for making life changing experiences, whether you are a student, graduate, or already working in a professional field. Working as volunteer in Costa Rica enables you to really get to know the country, its culture and people. The natives, also known as ‘Ticos’ are well-known for their hospitality and rather laid back attitude towards life. What is more, Costa Rica is the only country of the world that does not have an army but is the oldest democracy of Latin America with a functional social system.

Pura Vida – Dive into Costa Rican life and live like a Tico

‘Pura Vida’ are the words that you will hear most often when living in Costa Rica. ‘Pura Vida’ represents the natives’ joy of life, pride, optimism and levity. During your stay as a volunteer in Costa Rica, you will reside either in an accommodation together with other volunteers or you may stay with a Costa Rican host family. Living together with a family or fellow volunteers offers the opportunity to get to know the people and to make friends who you can spend your free time with. In Costa Rica a variety of projects are offered in the fields of education, animal protection, and the preservation of nature. Check out our projects (Volunteering), here.

Learning Spanish in day-to-day life

While working as a volunteer, you will easily learn the language and improve fast. Some of the voluntary projects such as the wildlife projects do not require a previous language class. However, basic knowledge of the language is important for you to find your way around.

FAQ

In principle, it is possible to spend your stay abroad together with friends. A language course and many volunteering projects can also be booked at short notice.

Ideal for all programs are at least three months in advance. In principle it is also possible for us to place short-term applicants (volunteering and language study travel) in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is a safe country and the people are very friendly and warmhearted. In big cities, as in every big city in the world, there is petty crime. When travelling, the following things should be taken into account: always keep an eye on valuables, always keep your hand luggage on your lap in buses, and at night you should not travel by bus or withdraw money from ATMs. Up-to-date information on the situation can be found at the Embassy or Foreign Office.

Please note that in Costa Rica all electronic devices can only be used with an adapter. They are available in many electronics stores.

In principle, no language course is mandatory in advance. However, depending on the volunteering program, certain levels of the language of your destination country may be required to complete the project. We would be happy to advise you individually on your chosen project.

Depending on the program, we work with host families in the vicinity or there are volunteer houses at the project site.

For all programs you have to be covered by foreign health insurance. We will be happy to help you find a suitable insurance policy.

During the language school and in the volunteering projects, you will always have a direct contact person to help you with any problems. Of course you can also always contact us.
