Many dogs and cats await you at the animal shelter. Animals are handed in weekly, examined by a doctor and nursed back to health. Unfortunately, there are a lot of stray dogs and cats living on the streets in Costa Rica. Your help in combating this problem is crucial.

Description
As in many South American countries, pets do not yet have the same status as in for example Germany. This makes it much more difficult to place them. The animal shelter has set itself the task of giving the animals a safe haven and caring for them.
Areas of responsibility: this includes cleaning the enclosures, feeding and, most importantly, playing and walking the animals. It is important for the animals to be treated lovingly so that they can be placed in a good family later on. You don’t need any previous experience. The most important thing is that you enjoy working with animals.

Living arrangements
Accommodation and meals on site
During your time in the volunteer project, you will either live with a host family or in volunteer accommodation. In this project you have the choice of accommodation. Your accommodation is located in the village within walking distance of restaurants, banks and supermarkets. The volunteer accommodation is optimally equipped: with Wifi, a kitchen and a washing machine. Please note that our volunteer accommodation is usually booked out more quickly. The volunteer house is just 3 minutes walking distance from the shelter.

Typical day in the project
A typical day in the street dog project
Morning shift: 8-11 a.m.
Afternoon shift: 3-5 p.m.
Volunteers work one shift per day, and it is usually a 5-day week. Times may vary slightly during your stay. Bear in mind that your days off may be during the week and not at the weekend, as the animals naturally need to be cared for at the weekend too.
Tasks:
- Feeding cats and dogs
- Walking the dogs
- Playing with animals
- Providing animals with the medication they need
- Cleaning and tidying the animal enclosures
- Daily cuddles
Extras
During your stay you can improve your Spanish skills and have contact with other travelers as well as locals. There is a lot to experience in your free time. You can go to the beach, go horse riding, swim in nearby waterfalls and much more. In the evening, there are various restaurants and bars where you can go out.

All programs can be booked with friends. If you would like to book a program as a group, we recommend that you enquire in advance. Each person must book the project individually.
Ideal for all programs are at least three months in advance. In principle it is also possible for us to place short-term applicants (volunteering and language study travel) in Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is a safe country and the people are very friendly and warmhearted. In big cities, as in every big city in the world, there is petty crime. When travelling, the following things should be taken into account: always keep an eye on valuables, always keep your hand luggage on your lap in buses, and at night you should not travel by bus or withdraw money from ATMs. Up-to-date information on the situation can be found at the Embassy or Foreign Office.
Please note that in Costa Rica all electronic devices can only be used with an adapter. They are available in many electronics stores.
In principle, no language course is mandatory in advance. However, depending on the volunteering program, certain levels of the language of your destination country may be required to complete the project. We would be happy to advise you individually on your chosen project.
Depending on the program, we work with host families in the vicinity or there are volunteer houses at the project site.
For all programs you have to be covered by foreign health insurance. We will be happy to help you find a suitable insurance policy.
During the language school and in the volunteering projects, you will always have a direct contact person to help you with any problems. Of course you can also always contact us.
