Description
You are supporting a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick, injured, abandoned and oil-polluted seabirds for over 50 years. Its main focus is on the protection of the endangered African penguin and the conservation of seabird populations. The organization has provided care for over 95,000 seabirds over the years and has contributed to a remarkable 19% increase in the African penguin population through its oil spill response.
As a volunteer in this exciting project in South Africa, you will work in a coastal bird sanctuary. Your tasks are of great importance for the protection of these fascinating birds and their habitat. You will clean the birds’ enclosures and swimming pools, maintain the equipment for food preparation and feeding and help prepare fish for different bird species.
In addition you will assist with catching, feeding, hydrating and giving medication to various bird species. Your help with the preparation of bird releases as well as the general maintenance of the center is vital. Your commitment will allow the sanctuary to continue its important work and give shorebirds a second chance. You will be part of an international team passionate about conservation, learning about South Africa’s rich culture and making new friends along the way.
However, please note that you will only be entrusted with most tasks involving direct contact with rescued birds if you stay for 6 weeks or longer, as this requires more detailed instruction and intensive involvement over a longer period of time.

Typical day in a project
The volunteer coordinator creates a monthly schedule that assigns volunteers to a maximum of five working days per week, including weekends and holidays.
A typical working day lasts from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm. You will always have breaks in between. These times may vary slightly depending on the capacity requirements of the center and the number of birds in care.
Every day looks different, depending on whether you receive an emergency call and go out on the coast or whether you take part in measures to preserve the penguins’ habitat – e.g. beach cleanings. However this is what a typical day might look like:
7:15 Breakfast at the volunteer house
7:45 Departure for the project
8:00 Briefing of the day, allocation of tasks
8:30 Preparation of the fish and subsequent feeding
11:00 Tea/coffee break
11:30 Administration of medication
13:00 Lunch break and lunch
14:00 Cleaning the rehabilitation enclosures
16:30 Checking the newly arrived injured birds and penguins
17:30 Return to the volunteer house
18:00 Dinner
18:30 Free time, e.g. watching the sunset on the beach or games/movie night

FAQ
FAQ
All programs can be booked with friends. If you would like to book a program as a group, we recommend that you enquire in advance. Each person must book the project individually.
Ideal for all programs are at least three months in advance. In principle it is also possible for us to place short-term applicants (volunteering and language study travel) in South Africa.
South Africa is a safe country and the people are very friendly and warmhearted. In big cities, as in every big city in the world, there is petty crime. When travelling, the following things should be taken into account: always keep an eye on valuables, always keep your hand luggage on your lap in buses, and at night you should not travel by bus or withdraw money from ATMs. Up-to-date information on the situation can be found at the Embassy or Foreign Office.
Please note that in South Africa all electronic devices can only be used with an adapter. They are available in many electronics stores.
In principle, no language course is mandatory in advance. However, depending on the volunteering program, certain levels of the language of your destination country may be required to complete the project. We would be happy to advise you individually on your chosen project.
Depending on the program, we work with host families in the vicinity or there are volunteer houses at the project site.
For all programs you have to be covered by foreign health insurance. We will be happy to help you find a suitable insurance policy.
During the language school and in the volunteering projects, you will always have a direct contact person to help you with any problems. Of course you can also always contact us.
Application process for a volunteering program
