The project to protect turtles in Uruguay has been running for more than 19 years. In Uruguay, very little importance is still attached to protecting the animals. It is therefore important for the project, which is led by biologists, to document observations as well as research and conservation activities.

Description
There are 5 different species of turtles in Uruguayan waters: green turtles (Chelonia mydas), loggerheads (Caretta caretta), leatherbacks (Dermochelys coriacea), olive ridleys (Lepidochelys olivacea) and hawksbills (Eretmochelys imbricata). The green turtle is declining in population worldwide, which is why it has been classified as “endangered” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The core problems of the decline include: Overfishing as well as poaching.
During your volunteer work in Uruguay, you can discover a cheerful culture. For travelers with little knowledge of the language, we recommend taking a language course in advance to help you find your way around the country when travelling and on bus trips. Travel with friends from the language school and experience Uruguay.
Tasks:
- Sighting and capture (using nets) of green turtle hatchlings in near-shore areas.
- Once a week: Long distance surveys in search of stranded sea turtles.
- Assisting the researchers with autopsies of a turtle.
- Maintenance of the sea turtle visitor center.
- Assisting with educational activities: raising public awareness by providing information to tourists and locals.
- Participation in recreational activities at neighboring sites.
- Supporting the rehabilitation of sick and weak sea turtles.
- Cleaning and changing the water in the turtles’ swimming pools.
- Help with tasks at the field station such as cleaning and cooking.
Travel must be organized by yourself!

Living arrangements
Accommodation: During your time in the sea turtle project in Uruguay, you will stay in simply furnished volunteer accommodation directly in the project location. Most of our projects take place on the beautiful Pacific coast. During the project, you will live with all the other volunteers directly on the beach, surrounded by beautiful nature.

Meals: 3 typical meals per day
Typical day in a project
Every day is different with animals. As a rule, a normal working day starts between 07.30-9.00 and lasts until 16-17. The times depend on the tides of the water. Volunteers support the project for a 5-day week between 6-8 hours a day. At noon you have between 1-1.5 hours lunch break. During the nesting season you will help in the afternoon and take a shift at night, together with your team members.

All programs can be booked with friends. If you would like to book a program as a group, we recommend that you enquire in advance. Each person must book the project individually.
Ideal for all programs are at least three months in advance. In principle it is also possible for us to place short-term applicants (volunteering and language study travel) in Uruguay.
Uruguay is a safe country and the people are very friendly and warmhearted. In big cities, as in every big city in the world, there is petty crime. When travelling, the following things should be taken into account: always keep an eye on valuables, always keep your hand luggage on your lap in buses, and at night you should not travel by bus or withdraw money from ATMs. Up-to-date information on the situation can be found at the Embassy or Foreign Office.
Please note that in Uruguay all electronic devices can only be used with an adapter. They are available in many electronics stores.
In principle, no language course is mandatory in advance. However, depending on the volunteering program, certain levels of the language of your destination country may be required to complete the project. We would be happy to advise you individually on your chosen project.
Depending on the program, we work with host families in the vicinity or there are volunteer houses at the project site.
For all programs you have to be covered by foreign health insurance. We will be happy to help you find a suitable insurance policy.
During the language school and in the volunteering projects, you will always have a direct contact person to help you with any problems. Of course you can also always contact us.
