Volunteering in Greece

Save sea turtles in Greece

Save sea turtles

Jásou - Welcome in Greece!
Sun, summer, beach and a lot of culture to explore. Greece is for a good reason one of the most popular holiday destinations.
Our sea turtle project is located on the beautiful island of Kefalonia. Our goal is to protect sea turtles and prevent their extinction. In this project, you can increase your knowledge of wildlife conservation and, among other things, develop interpersonal skills while exploring new places.

Arriving at the airport in Kefalonia, you will be picked up by a driver and taken to your apartment, where you will meet the other volunteers. The project has two locations: Argostoli (about 15 minutes drive) and Lixouri (about 1 hour drive). After your arrival you will get a small tour of the house and you will be shown where the bikes for the project are. At the introductory event in the evening, the team introduces itself and you will be given some important information about the project but also about your volunteer work and the island/location.

Project periods: May to October, depending on the period, different tasks are required. Important: The sea turtle project is very popular in the high season July & August and therefore booked up quickly. A timely application is important in these two months.

Day of arrival: Argostoli: every second Sunday of the month; Lixouri: every second Tuesday of the month

A typical day in the project:
Your tasks will be very varied - this depends a lot on the season. Regardless of the season, the following tasks are involved: observation from the port to find new turtle nests, cleaning the beaches and identifying, documenting and rescuing the turtles. For this project, it is important that you are a bit sporty. Beaches, which are one to five kilometers away, you drive by bike. To beaches that are further away, you will be taken by car.

May & June: You observe the turtles mating, the behavior among each other, document the species and look for nests and protect them.
July - October: The nests continue to be protected. Turtles hatch and you take over the documentation of the numbers. During this time, turtles are tagged so that sustainable data can be collected. In October, smaller preparations are made for the coming year and you usually have a little more free time.

Accommodation during the volunteer project:
During your time in the project, you will live in an apartment together with other volunteers. The apartment is equipped with a kitchen (cookware, utensils & fridge) and a bathroom where you also have hot water. You can shop in a local supermarket nearby. Usually all volunteers cook together or go out for Greek food in the tavern. The project is best reached by bike, which you get provided by the project.

Free time: Our project is very nicely located, and the accommodations are located in coastal places. So, you can take advantage in your free time and go to the beach and enjoy the sea. On weekends it is possible to explore other islands by ferry. Get to know Greece and its warm people!
